A rare French gold ring, c.1810, in which a personal cipher has been cut clean through the band and become the design itself.Monogram rings of this period almost always carry their letters engraved on a flat bezel. Here, the goldsmith has pierced the gold away around the entwined initials so that the cipher stands in open silhouette. It is a far more laborious technique, and one rarely seen on a ring. The shoulders are pierced and chased with stylised leaves, framing the cipher like a cartouche. The ring is also unusually small. It was probably made for a child, or for someone with very slender fingers, which adds to its intimacy. The band tests as 18K gold and carries the French owl mark.It sits flat and comfortably on the finger, and can be resized.Details: France, c.1810; 18K gold (tested), French owl mark; 2.56g; UK G½, US 3½, can be resized.Condition: Good. Light surface scratches and wear to the chasing, consistent with age.
