    • A small-scale French Alphonse Augis love medal, made in Paris around 1930 in 18K gold.

The front carries Augis’ celebrated inscription “+ qu’hier – que demain” — “more than yesterday, less than tomorrow”. The phrase derives from verses written in 1889 by the poet Rosemonde Gérard, wife of Cyrano de Bergerac author Edmond Rostand: “each day I love you more, today more than yesterday and much less than tomorrow.” Alphonse Augis adapted the sentiment into his now-iconic Médaille d’Amour in the early 20th century.

Here, the + is represented by a small rose-cut diamond, while the – is formed from two calibre-cut rubies. The softly matte gold ground is finished with a fine radiating starburst pattern and surrounded by a decorative border.
The medal bears the French eagle’s head hallmark for 18K gold, together with the maker’s lozenge for A.A., Alphonse Augis. The reverse is stamped “Déposé”, indicating that the design was patented.

At just 12mm in diameter and weighing 1.5g, this is a particularly discreet version of one of the most recognisable French love tokens of the 20th century.

      18K gold. Rose-cut diamond. Calibre-cut rubies. France, c.1930. 12mm diameter. 1.5g.
