    • An antique cluster ring, c.1880, centred on a certified 5.71 carat unheated natural Ceylon sapphire.

Untreated sapphires of this size are increasingly rare, and this one has a soft, luminous cornflower blue that heating so often dulls. The stone is certified by the Bellerophon gem laboratory in Paris as a natural sapphire of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin, with no heat.

It is ringed by twenty antique cushion-cut diamonds, each about 3 mm, in gold rubover settings, and rose-cut diamonds are set on the shoulders.

The ring has an interesting history of its own. The shank appears to come from an earlier ring, probably c.1800 to 1820, and was reused for this cluster head around 1880, giving the ring a character unlike other examples. The gold tests as 21K, and it carries the French owl mark for imported gold.

      An exceptional engagement ring.

Details: c.1880, with an earlier shank c.1800–1820; gold testing 21K; unheated natural Ceylon sapphire, 5.71 ct, 13.37 × 9.43 × 5.27 mm (Bellerophon certificate); twenty cushion-cut diamonds approx. 3 mm; rose-cut diamond shoulders; 5.77g; UK O½, US 7¼.

      Condition: Excellent.
