    • A Spanish colonial silver 'cob' coin of the late 17th to 18th century, set in a 14K gold ring of the 1970s.

Cobs were hand-cut silver coins, irregular in shape but struck to strict weights. This one, about 17mm across, is a 1 or 2 reales coin minted in Peru or Bolivia, showing the cross of Jerusalem dividing the arms of Castile and León with two lions and two castles. The date side is partly worn.

Cobs were the main currency of transatlantic trade, turn up often in shipwreck hoards and are bound up with tales of pirates and privateers. This one was almost certainly recovered from a shipwreck, and set in gold in the 1970s, when treasure jewellery was in fashion, probably in the United States. The ring carries a French 'St Jacques' import mark for 14K gold and the French swan mark for silver.

A ring for collectors and adventurers alike.

Details: coin late 17th-18th century, Peru or Bolivia; mount 14K gold, probably USA, c.1970s; French St Jacques import mark and swan mark; coin approx. 17mm; UK N, US 6¾; 6.91g.

Condition: Very good, with wear consistent with age and use; the coin is secure.
