A fine example of antique French paste jewellery, dating to around the mid-19th century. The ring centres on a large cushion-shaped pink paste stone, measuring approximately 8 x 7mm, with a vivid raspberry-pink colour reminiscent of fine pink tourmaline or spinel.The stone is held within an elegant open silver gallery, its individual claws formed as tiny fleur-de-lis, above a finely made 18K gold band.In the 18th and early 19th century, paste jewellery was worn at the highest levels of society. “Paste” refers to hand-cut and polished lead glass, often foil-backed, created to imitate the colour and brilliance of precious gemstones. Far from being a cheap substitute, the finest paste jewels were technically demanding luxury objects. The craft was famously developed by Georges Frédéric Strass, jeweller to the court of Louis XV, whose highly reflective paste jewels became fashionable amongst European aristocracy.The ring bears French control marks for both 18K gold with silver.
