A French cluster ring of about 1850, centred on a natural purple saltwater pearl with rich lilac tones.The pearl is most likely of South Sea origin; at the time such pearls were typically harvested in Tahitian waters, then under French influence. Their colour made them prized by the European elite, and Empress Eugénie is known to have worn similar pearls.Ten rose cut diamonds surround it in open-backed settings, in a silver gallery with a pierced, gently scalloped edge. The shoulders are chased with Rococo-style foliage. The shank carries the French horse's head mark for 18K gold (used 1838-1919) and the maker's mark AH.A rare and romantic alternative engagement ring.Details: c.1850; France; 18K gold with silver-topped bezel, horse's head mark, maker AH; pearl approx. 5mm x 3.5mm x 4mm; ten rose cut diamonds; bezel 10mm x 8mm; UK P, US 7¾; 2.68g.Condition: Very good. Under magnification one diamond setting shows a minor gap, probably from historic wear. The pearl is secure, with bright nacre.
