    • A rare gold cross from the Romantic era, made in rich, buttery high-karat gold and hung with tassels of natural seed pearls.

The cross is built from hollow gold tubes, decorated with rows of tiny raised gold circles edged in fine twisted wire. This technique, known as cannetille, was the height of fashion in the 1820s and 30s. It gave jewellers real volume without weight, so despite its generous size the cross is light and easy to wear.

Each arm ends in a graceful scroll and loop. Three small tassels of seed pearls hang from the sides and base, swaying as it moves and catching the light.

The gold tests at 22 to 23K, far richer than most jewellery of the period, and you can see it in the deep, warm colour. The style and the gold point to northern Europe, quite possibly Sweden.

An opulent yet airy jewel, made to catch the candlelight, and just as striking today.

      Details: c.1830; northern Europe, possibly Sweden; 22–23K gold (tested), seed pearls; 6 × 4.5 × 1 cm; 7.21g.
Condition: Very good. There is gentle surface wear and faint age marks to the tubes. The pearl tassels are intact. Ready to wear.
