    • This rare antique enamelled cross pendant from ‘Puy-en-Velay’ is a beautiful example of early 19th century French regional jewellery.

The provinces of France are often known for their distinctive enamel work. This cross is a testament to those made in the village of ‘Puy-en-Velay’ in the region of Auvergne, famous for its pilgrimage sites.

The double-sided pendant is crafted in 18K gold with vibrant blue and green enamelwork, accentuating a central golden figure of Christ on the cross in raised relief. The colours of the enamel, a vibrant blue and green, likely represent the heavens and the earth, respectively, blending themes of spirituality and the natural world.

At each end, three golden bell-shaped drops dangle gracefully, adding movement and distinct regional charm to the piece. These three drop-shaped pendants most likely represented the tears of Christ who was said to have wept three times. They take the form of lead-bells which were used on the tips on the whips used by the Romans to flagellate Christ.

The pendant would have been worn as a personal symbol of faith. It is topped with the inscription "INRI," an abbreviation of the Latin phrase Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews), traditionally placed above Christ during the crucifixion.

The pendant carries two French hallmarks which indicate French 18K gold, made between the years 1819 and 1838. It measures 6cm x 3.5cm and has a good weight to it, weighing 9.75 grams in total.

For similar referenced examples see ‘Les Bijoux des Français’ by Michael C.W. Fieggen pp.43-44.

These crosses were often passed down through families, becoming treasured heirlooms. This example remains in remarkable condition despite being about 200 years old, a real rarity! It has never been altered and amazingly, there are minimal losses to the colourful enamel. A truly unusual and special find.
