Antique 17th century gold and ruby ring with box bezel

Buying Antique Rings Online: Sizing, Resizing and Wearability

Buying an antique ring online can feel daunting. Every piece is one of a kind, sizes vary enormously, and you cannot try it on first. Here is how to buy with confidence.

Antique rings vary enormously in width and height, so the same size can feel quite different from one ring to the next.

Know your size

The most reliable way to find your size is to have your finger measured by a jeweller, at the end of the day when fingers are slightly larger. UK sizes use letters (with halves, such as L½) and US sizes use numbers. We give both in every listing.

Remember that wide bands fit more snugly than narrow ones, so you may need a quarter or half size larger for a broad signet or a chunky ancient ring.

Complimentary resizing

We offer complimentary resizing on every ring where it is possible, carried out by our specialist bench jeweller, who is experienced with antique pieces. Most rings can be sized up or down by a few sizes. Send us your size before you order and we will confirm what is possible for the ring you love.

What makes a ring easier or harder to resize?

  • Usually straightforward: plain gold bands, most Victorian and Edwardian rings, and many signet rings.
  • Harder stones help: rings set with sapphires and rubies are generally more manageable to work on than those with more delicate stones.
  • Needs more care: rings with emeralds or opals, stones set flush into the band, bezel settings that run into the hoop, hollow shanks, and Georgian rings with foiled, closed-back settings, which must be protected from heat and moisture.
  • Best not resized: ancient and medieval rings, and pieces where resizing would damage engraving or enamel. These are best worn on the finger they fit, or on a chain.

Email us with your size and we will talk to our bench jeweller and tell you exactly what can be done.

Choosing a ring for everyday wear

  • Low profiles such as converted stickpin heads, gypsy settings and flat intaglios catch less on clothing.
  • Harder stones such as diamonds, sapphires and rubies wear better than opals, pearls or soft glass.
  • Solid shanks are more robust than very thin or hollow ones.
  • Keep foiled Georgian jewels dry; read our guide to Georgian rose cut diamonds.
