A delicate French religious pendant dating to the 1940s, recently rediscovered among a small cache of long-forgotten jeweller’s stock.The reversible centre is carved from mother-of-pearl, depicting the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Lourdes on one side and Saint Bernadette Soubirous on the other. Bernadette’s visions of the Virgin at Lourdes in 1858 transformed the town into one of Europe’s most important Catholic pilgrimage sites, and small devotional jewels such as this were worn as personal expressions of faith and remembrance.The mother-of-pearl is held within a finely worked 18K gold mount, surrounded by a delicate openwork border resembling twisted rope or lace. Its iridescent surface gives both carved portraits a particularly soft appearance as the pendant moves in the light.The pendant bears the French eagle’s head hallmark for 18K gold, alongside a maker’s lozenge.Measuring 16mm in diameter and weighing 1.43g, it is a discreet and highly wearable antique religious pendant. It remains in very good condition, with the carving crisp and the mount secure.
