    • A 19th century intaglio ring, c.1860; set with a finely carved carnelian depicting a laureate head of a Roman emperor.

The intaglio is well executed, showing strong classical influence; the subject possibly representing Caligula. It was likely carved in the early 19th century in keeping with the mounting, though an earlier origin cannot be entirely excluded.

The gold mount is decorated with delicate wirework and granulation in the Etruscan revival taste, with an oval bezel framed by a twisted border. The intaglio has a convex reverse.

Finger size: UK O; US 7.25
      Intaglio: 15 × 13 mm
      Weight: 2.94g m
      Tests as 14K gold

A finely made example of the classical revival; combining archaeological inspiration with skilled 19th century craftsmanship.
