A finely made French devotional pendant dating to the Belle Époque c.1910, centred on a delicately engraved mother-of-pearl profile of the Virgin Mary. The soft iridescence of the pearl lends the image a quiet luminosity that was especially favoured in early 20th-century religious jewellery. The pendant is set within a quatrefoil gold mount, a form long associated with ecclesiastical architecture and sacred imagery, particularly in Gothic revival design. Surrounding the central plaque is a border of raised ivy leaves, an enduring Christian symbol of eternal life, fidelity and steadfast faith, frequently employed in devotional jewellery of the period. The reverse is plain and smoothly finished, allowing the pendant to sit comfortably against the skin and offering the possibility of discreet engraving if desired. The pendant bears the French eagle’s head hallmark, indicating manufacture in Paris and confirming 18K gold.Weight 1.58g. Measures 2.4 x 2.2cm.
