A small vintage French 18K gold heart pendant by Alphonse Augis, dated 1936 to the reverse. Augis is best known for the celebrated Médaille d’Amour, a romantic French love medal carrying the phrase “+ qu’hier – que demain”, meaning “more than yesterday, less than tomorrow.”The phrase comes from a line by the French poet Rosemonde Gérard: “Aujourd’hui plus qu’hier et bien moins que demain” — “today more than yesterday and much less than tomorrow.” Written for her husband, Edmond Rostand, it became one of the most recognisable romantic sentiments in 20th-century French jewellery. Augis first adapted the line into jewellery in 1907, using the plus and minus signs as a clever visual rebus.This example is beautifully detailed despite its small scale, with a heart-shaped body, radiating sunburst ground, raised lettering and a floral wreath border. The reverse is engraved 1936 and marked DÉPOSÉ, indicating a registered design. It also bears a faded French eagle head hallmark for 18K gold, alongside the maker’s lozenge A.A for Alphonse Augis.The pendant measures approximately 14 × 12mm and weighs 1.48g. It is in very good vintage condition, with light surface wear consistent with age.
