A delicate French religious pendant dating to the 1930s, recently rediscovered among a small cache of long-forgotten French jeweller’s stock.At its centre is a finely carved mother-of-pearl plaque depicting Our Lady of Lourdes, shown in profile beneath her veil. The softly iridescent carving is framed within an architectural 18K gold mount, decorated with stylised roses and crisp geometric detailing characteristic of the Art Deco period.Devotional jewellery depicting Our Lady of Lourdes became particularly popular in France following the Marian apparitions reported by Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes in 1858, and such medals were worn both as expressions of faith and as personal protective objects.The pendant bears the French eagle’s head hallmark for 18K gold, together with a maker’s lozenge.
