    • A sculptural French ring of about 1850: a glowing moonstone held aloft on a classical column between two Tritons.

The approximately 5.4ct moonstone cabochon shows a strong blue-white sheen (adularescence) and sits on a miniature Ionic column, flanked by two finely modelled Tritons, the sea-god sons of Neptune. The ring is made in silver and 18K gold, with classical scrolls and pierced shoulders.

It belongs to the neo-Renaissance revival led in France by goldsmiths such as Jules Wièse and François-Désiré Froment-Meurice, and is in their manner. A comparable figural ring attributed to Wièse is in the British Museum (AF.2558).

A rare, architectural statement ring for a collector of 19th-century revival jewellery.

      Details: c.1850; France; silver and 18K gold; moonstone cabochon approx. 5.4ct, 13mm x 10mm x 6mm; UK O½, US 7½; 11.5g.

Condition: A historic resizing has obscured the maker's marks, and one of the gold shoulder straps is missing; neither spoils the look of the design.
