A bold and unusual vintage French ring, crafted in solid 18K yellow gold and set with a striking natural star sapphire. Dating from the 1980s, this piece is marked with the French eagle’s head hallmark, indicating Paris origin and a guaranteed gold fineness of 18 karats. At the centre is a 2.1ct cabochon-cut sapphire displaying pronounced six-rayed asterism—a rare optical effect where light reflects in a star pattern due to fine rutile inclusions. These star formations are exposed when the sapphire is in direct sunlight or direct overhead lighting. The cabochon measures 8 x 6 x 4 mm and is set in an open-backed mount. The gold setting is richly detailed with a pineapple-like crosshatched floral pattern around the bezel and down the shoulders, giving the ring a textured and almost sculptural quality. A sizing bar is currently fitted inside the band, making it a UK size I½ (US 4.5), but this could be removed to allow resizing up by approximately one size. The ring measures 12mm north to south at the front and tapers to 4mm at the back. It weighs a substantial 11.69 grams. In excellent condition, this vintage ring makes a striking impression—especially when its star comes to life under natural light. A beautiful and rare example of French goldsmithing with an optical twist.
