Rare Antique Late 18th Century Garnet Intaglio Signet Ring with Rose Cut Diamonds
This fantastic signet ring dates to around 1780 and was made in Paris. A closed-back and bezel set 3.7ct garnet cabochon gemstone is intricately engraved to depict Zeus. Engraved just beneath the bust is an alchemical/planetary-type symbol with lightning bolts protruding from the centre.
The neoclassical intaglio is flanked by two rose cut diamonds in rubover silver settings, typical of the period. The shoulders are further decorated with a floral motif to each side and the underside of the bezel features a smooth domed design.
Zeus is the sky and thunder god who rules as king of the gods of Mount Olympus. His Roman equivalent Jupiter. Zeus was respected as an allfather who was chief of the gods and assigned the others to their roles.
