    • A gorgeous Austrian 14K gold modernist aquamarine ring, circa 1970.

This vintage ring is crafted in solid gold and set with an unusual 3.7ct mixed cut aquamarine of a pale blue hue. The gemstone is bezel set in a modernist navette-shaped signet mount. The band is stamped with an Austrian hallmark indicating 14K gold.

The name 'aquamarine' comes from the Latin words 'aqua' (water) and 'marina' (of the sea). It has been used in jewellery for at least 3000 years with references in Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Sumerian writings. The Romans in particular believed the sea-blue gem washed ashore after spilling out of the mermaid's treasure chest. Blessed by the sea god Neptune, they trusted the crystals to bring fortune and protection to those who found them.

UK ring size L, US size 5.75

The ring weighs 5.01 grams in total and is in great overall condition. The ring measures 14mm north to south at the front and 2mm at the back.
