A rare and delicate example of 19th-century Swedish jewellery, this antique ring was crafted in Karlskrona in 1879 and showcases the intricate reverse églomisé technique—an art form in which the underside of the glass is engraved and painted by hand.The central panel displays the three symbolic emblems for ‘faith, hope and charity’: a cross, anchor, and flaming heart. These motifs were highly popular during the Victorian period, representing the guiding virtues of the era; religious devotion, steadfastness in adversity, and selfless love. Often seen in sentimental jewellery, they served as both moral compass and personal talisman.Here, the symbols are rendered in fine gold detailing over a vivid blue background, likely made from an early synthetic material rather than gemstone. The bezel measures 6 x 5mm, flanked by sculptural gold shoulders with stylised foliate forms.The ring is fully hallmarked for 18K gold with Swedish control marks, including the maker’s mark ‘OJB’, the date mark for 1879 (‘A6’), and the town mark for Karlskrona.It is a UK size Q (US size 8) and weighs 1.5 grams.
