A small antique French religious pendant, dating to around the 1930s and rediscovered among a cache of long-forgotten old jeweller’s stock. Made in 18K yellow gold, the pendant is set with a carved mother of pearl medallion depicting St Christopher carrying the Christ Child, one of the most enduring protective images in Christian devotional jewellery.St Christopher was traditionally invoked as the patron saint of travellers, and medals bearing his image were often worn for protection on journeys. Here he is shown in the classic iconography: carrying the Christ Child across water, with his staff beside him. The cool lustre of the mother of pearl gives the scene a soft, devotional quality, contrasting beautifully with the warm gold frame. The gold surround is finely worked with an openwork triangular border and rope-twist detailing, giving the pendant more presence than its small scale might suggest. The reverse is plain, making it comfortable to wear and leaving the focus on the relief carving to the front. The pendant bears a French eagle head hallmark for 18K gold, along with a maker’s lozenge. It measures approximately 16mm in diameter and weighs 1.33g. Condition is excellent, please note chain not included.A charming antique French St Christopher pendant, combining 1930s devotional design, mother of pearl carving and 18K gold craftsmanship in a very wearable size.
