    • A heavy 20th-century ring made after the ancient gold 'Sri' rings of Java, inscribed in Nagari script.

Between the 7th and 10th centuries, Central Java produced gold rings with broad, pointed-oval bezels inscribed with the variations of the word Sri. In the Hindu-Buddhist culture of the period, Sri means fortune and prosperity, and it is also the name of Dewi Sri, the goddess of rice and fertility, who is still honoured in Java and Bali today. Rings like these were worn as auspicious amulets. Similar ancient examples are published in studies of Javanese gold.

This ring is a faithful 20th-century interpretation, possibly made as a museum souvenir. It is solid silver, heavily plated in 18K gold, with the inscription crisply raised on a textured ground.

There is some fading to the gold on one edge of the bezel, which reveals the silver underneath, though it is not very noticeable.

A substantial, characterful ring, and an accessible way to own this ancient form.

Details: 20th century; Javanese style; gold-plated silver (18K plating); face 2.6 × 1.5 cm; band 0.6 cm at the back; 24.86g; UK N, US 6¾.

Condition: Good. Slight fading of the gold plating to one edge of the bezel.
