    • A wonderful antique enamelled snake and cross ring. This piece probably started life as a stickpin dating to the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870 and was later been converted into a ring. It is crafted in 18K yellow gold and the serpent's body is emblazoned with vibrant cobalt blue guilloché enamel which provides a luminous reptilian texture. The snake coils around a rose cut diamond studded cross, with a further rose cut decorating the serpent’s head.

The ring is in great overall condition, there is some losses to the surface of the blue enamel however I find this replicates the skin of a snake in a more naturalistic manner!

The serpent motif has been used in jewellery throughout history. It became increasingly popular during the Georgian and Victorian periods following archaeological finds of the 19th century, the fascination with the ancient Egyptian symbol of the Ouroboros and the association given to the snake in the Victorian period as a symbol of eternal love and wisdom. It’s use in jewellery became very prominent after Prince Albert gave the young Queen Victoria a snake engagement ring to symbolise his everlasting loyalty, protection and love!

UK size M, US size 6.25

The ring weighs 2.7 grams and is stamped with French control marks indicating 18K gold.

The ring head measures 14mm x 10mm and sits flat on the finger which makes it ideal for frequent wear The rose cut diamonds measure 1mm in diameter.
