A Victorian banded agate 9K gold signet ring. It was made in London in 1855 by George Jamieson of Aberdeen.

The classic oval shaped signet ring is set with a lovely banded agate gemstone, with a white streak running horizontally through the stone.

UK size Q 1/2, US size 8.25.

The ring weighs 4.15 grams of 9K gold and is in good overall condition. The agate measures 12mm x 10mm.

George Jamieson was the son of Aberdeen silversmith William Jamieson, and in 1862 he participated as an exhibitor to the International Exhibition.

Interestingly, as seen on this ring, the early hallmarks of George Jamieson, show London city marks and date letters in Aberdeen hallmarking style, a rare and unofficial ‘provincial’ style of hallmarking, possibly a way of paying homage to his Scottish upbringing. The firm are still in business today and located at 142, Union Street, Aberdeen.

Victorian jewellery was also notable for its use of complex symbolism, such as snake motifs that represented eternal love or the use of flowers to convey hidden meanings. The jewellery made in this era featured the finest materials and was made by highly skilled craftsmen, making it some of the most desirable antique jewellery for its unique charm and fine quality.
