    • French Antique Art Nouveau 18K Gold Lilac Star Sapphire Ring

A gorgeous antique French Art Nouveau figural ring made in Paris, circa 1900. The ring is crafted in 18K yellow gold and features an 1.63ct star sapphire.

The milky spheroid shaped lilac ‘star sapphire’ displays asterism, a rare optical phenomenon that occurs when light hitting the surface of a cabochon gemstone reflects off parallel sets of fibrous inclusions, in turn causing a star shaped reflection. This particular sapphire displays a lovely six-ray star. For optimum effect, it is best viewed in sunlight or from a single source of light (see video).

The world witnessed a grand display of Art Nouveau jewels, objects and architecture at the Paris ‘Exposition Universelle’ in 1900. The stylistic movement was inspired by the natural forms such as the sinuous curves of flowers and insects and turned them into expressions of abstract ideas.

This particular design is infused with various elements of the natural world. From a head on perspective the ring takes the form of a budding flower with the star sapphire in its centre. An intricate engraving runs down the side of the ring, from one angle it appears to be an ivy leaf, but from another angle the design resembles a dragonfly or moth attracted to the light of the star sapphire in the centre!

The brilliant imagery and symbolism present in this ring would make a very special addition to any collection!

French eagle control mark to indicates 750 gold (18K) made in Paris. Signed Delon and attributed to Delon Création, Paris.
