This gorgeous antique Art Nouveau gold ring was made in the Netherlands and dates to the first half of the 20th century. This figural statement ring is an iconic example of Art Nouveau, drawing inspiration from artists like Alphonse Mucha. The ring depicts the side profile of the face of a beautiful Nymph maiden, and a sapphire set inside of a flower in her hair, seamlessly blending with additional floral motifs in the surroundings. The design displays a fantastic texture, and over the years the ring has developed a stunning warm gold patina.
The ‘Art Nouveau’ movement emerged in Europe around the late 19th century during a period of mass production and industrialisation. The movement was all about bringing nature back into design with flowing lines and intricate details. This ring is stylistically similar to the kind of jewels on display at the ‘Exposition Universelle’ which took place in Paris in the year 1900. The world witnessed a grand display of Art Nouveau jewels, objects and architecture at the exhibition which took natural forms or objects and turned them into expressions of abstract ideas - beauty, the eternal and the feminine. The depiction of women in Art Nouveau jewellery was simultaneously eroticised and romanticised, perhaps a reaction to the changing role of women at the time, most notably aligning with the Suffragette movement. It is therefore unsurprising that most avid wearers of this type of jewellery were wealthy but bohemian women of the time, including actresses like Sarah Bernhardt, La Belle Otero as well as socialites like Countess Greffulhe!

The ring weighs 6.63 grams. the sapphire measures 3mm in diameter, whilst the face of the ring measures 24mm x 20mm and adjoins to bifurcated shoulders. The ring has great coverage of the finger, and curves around the shape of the finger to allow for very comfortable wear. The outer band is stamped with a Dutch hallmark for 14K gold as well as a maker’s mark.
