    • An unusually decorative example of the celebrated French Alphonse Augis love medal, dating to around 1930.

The medal bears the famous rebus “+ qu’hier – que demain” — “more than yesterday, less than tomorrow” — adapted by Alphonse Augis from an 1889 love poem by Rosemonde Gérard to her husband, Edmond Rostand. Augis transformed the phrase into jewellery in 1907, with the plus and minus signs becoming its instantly recognisable symbols of ever-growing love.

This example is particularly attractive, with a radiating sunburst-engraved centre surrounded by a faceted, scalloped border. The plus sign is platinum-topped, while the minus sign is picked out with three calibre-cut rubies, creating the characteristic red accent associated with these medals.

Crafted in 18K gold, it bears the French eagle’s head hallmark together with the A.A. maker’s lozenge for Alphonse Augis. The reverse is engraved with the monogram “JV”.

      Details:

      Diameter: 19mm
      Weight: 2.58g
      Platinum-topped plus symbol
      Three calibre-cut rubies
      Very good antique condition
