    • A late 19th-century princely cluster ring from Siam (Thailand), bright with rubies, garnets, diamonds and emeralds in high-karat gold.

Made by the goldsmiths of the Siamese court, it has a rose cut diamond at the centre in a rub-over gold setting, riveted to the body of the ring; the rivet shows on the underside, a feature typical of 18th- and 19th-century Siamese rings. A halo of rubies, garnets and diamonds surrounds it, with emeralds on the shoulders. The thick band is pierced with scrollwork and stamped with a French gold import mark from when it was later brought into France.

Rings like this were worn in royal and aristocratic ceremonies at the Bangkok court, such as the Royal Tonsure that marked a royal child's coming of age, and were sometimes given to important visitors. With 159 children between them, Kings Mongkut (Rama IV) and Chulalongkorn (Rama V) kept Bangkok's goldsmiths busy.

      Colourful, weighty and very wearable.

Details: late 19th century; Siam (Thailand); tests as 21K gold, French import mark; UK L½, US 6; 12.93g.

Condition: Good and wearable. There is evidence of a historic resizing at the back of the band, and two of the stones appear to be later replacements.
