    • A German Biedermeier gold necklace of about 1840, set with turquoise and seed pearls: a sentimental 'forget-me-not' jewel.

Turquoise jewellery became popular in Britain around 1830 and spread across Europe. It was thought to protect its wearer and to stand for true love, and its colour, like forget-me-not flowers, made it a favourite gift to keep the giver in mind. Here robin's-egg turquoise of varying sizes is paired with silvery seed pearls, a sought-after Biedermeier combination.

Scrolled links lead to a central panel with two 5cm drops. The links are hollow and worked in repoussé (hammered from behind), a popular way to make a little gold go a long way in the Georgian and early Victorian periods. The drapery shape, made to move and glisten by candlelight, suited the low necklines of the time.

A delicate statement necklace for evening or day.

Details: c.1840; Germany; 15K gold, later 9K gold clasp; turquoise and seed pearls; length 42cm; central panel 4.5cm x 3cm; drops 5cm; 9.18g.

Condition: Excellent despite its hollow construction. All parts are original except the small spring-bolt clasp, a later replacement in 9K gold. All stones are secure.
