    • A late 19th-century French locket ring in 18K gold: a portrait miniature under glass, with a hidden compartment beneath.

The oval miniature sits under a glass panel. On the underside is a hinged compartment, made to hold a small memento such as a photograph, a lock of hair or a note. The existing portrait can easily be replaced with an image of your own.

Portrait rings were usually tokens of love or remembrance, commissioned and worn by close family. The black enamel suggests this one may have served as a mourning ring: a discreet way of keeping someone close.

The ring carries the French eagle's head mark for Paris-made 18K gold and a maker's lozenge mark with the initials LP. A deeply personal jewel, ready to hold a story of its own.

Details: late 19th century; Paris, France; 18K gold, eagle's head mark, maker's mark LP; bezel 16mm x 10mm; band 3.5mm at the back; UK Q, US 8¼; 3.84g.

Condition: Very good. The enamel is in very good condition, the hinged compartment works perfectly, and the glass is secure and well preserved.
