    • A rare mid-17th century table-cut ruby ring, made in Western Europe around c.1650, in the Low Countries - Dutch or Flemish in origin. The ring is made in high-karat gold, testing as approximately 21K, and is set with a richly coloured ruby in a raised box bezel. The stone has a deep wine-red tone and measures approximately 4 × 3mm, weighing around 0.40ct.

The form is wonderfully typical of 17th-century gem-set rings: a plain tapering hoop rising to a rectangular box bezel, with small scalloped recessed details around the sides of the setting. The ruby is cut in a table-cut form, the dominant gemstone cut of the late medieval and Renaissance periods. It is set closed-back and foiled, in keeping with period setting techniques designed to intensify the colour of the gem.

Despite its age, the ring remains highly wearable. The construction is solid, the ruby is secure, and the gold has the soft surface texture and colour expected of a jewel nearly four centuries old. The ring has later received the French owl import hallmark, indicating it was brought into France, and passed through the French art market at a later date.

      The ring is a UK size P / US 7.5 and weighs 1.87g. The box bezel measures approximately 7 × 5 × 5mm.

Condition is very good for age, with light surface wear to the gold and age-related wear to the stone and setting, but no structural issues. A compact but important 17th-century ruby ring, combining a table-cut stone, high-karat gold and the distinctive raised box setting of the period.
