    • A late 18th-century Grand Tour glass intaglio copying the famous 'Gemma Stosch', set in a later 9K gold ring.

The original Gemma Stosch is an Etruscan carnelian scarab of about 500-480 BC, now in the Antikensammlung in Berlin. It shows five warriors from the Seven Against Thebes. Found near Perugia before 1742, it was given to Baron Philipp von Stosch in 1755 and became famous through Winckelmann's History of Art (1764) and a 1756 engraving by Schweickart.

Grand Tour travellers collected moulded glass copies of celebrated gems as souvenirs and marks of taste. This red glass paste, imitating carnelian, follows the style of James and William Tassie and other paste gem makers of the period. Set in its gold frame, it was later mounted on a 9K gold ring with Regency-style leafy shoulders, hallmarked London 1986, maker EJ.

A wearable piece of 18th-century classical scholarship.

Details: intaglio late 18th century, ring 1986; ring hallmarked London 1986, 9K gold, maker EJ; glass intaglio 22mm x 18mm; UK R, US 8¾; 5.76g.

      Condition: Excellent.
