    • A finely modelled French 18K gold medal pendant, circa 1910, depicting Jeanne d’Arc in armour. She is shown in prayerful profile, looking upwards and surrounded by a halo, a design that reflects her devotional status in France at the beginning of the 20th century. The date is especially significant: Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and later canonised in 1920, so this pendant was almost certainly made in response to that renewed national and religious devotion.

The design is signed E. Dropsy, for Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy (1848–1923), a Paris-born French engraver and medallist known for finely executed medallic work, including religious and allegorical subjects. The relief is crisp and beautifully handled, with particular attention to the armour, face and halo. The pendant has a subtle quatrefoil outline rather than a plain round form, giving the piece a more unusual silhouette.

The reverse bears an armorial device, the arms traditionally associated with Joan of Arc: a sword, crown and fleurs-de-lis, and her year of birth 1412. The pendant is struck with the French eagle-head hallmark for 18K gold and a ‘GP’ for the maker’s mark. It measures approximately 2cm in diameter and weighs 2.1g. Condition is very good, with light surface wear consistent with age; the relief, inscription and marks remain clear.

A rare and evocative French 18K gold Jeanne d’Arc medal pendant, made during a pivotal moment in her modern religious and national cult.
