    • A late 17th-century Baroque pendant of about 1680, most likely Spanish or possibly Portuguese, built around a large baroque pearl.

The pearl is unusually large and full of character, with natural folds and a darker lobe at its base. It sits in a pierced gold mount of scrolling foliage set with tiny rose cut diamonds, with three pearl drops hanging below on coiled wire.

The back is a fine openwork filigree plate, edged with curling tendrils and possibly showing stylised pineapples, then an exotic new arrival from the Americas and a symbol of luxury. Pendants like this were worn on the chest across the Iberian world in the 1660s to 1680s.

A rare courtly jewel of the Baroque age.

Details: c.1680; probably Spain, possibly Portugal; pendant tests as approx. 22-23K gold, later 18in chain tests as approx. 21K; baroque pearl, pearl drops, rose cut diamonds; pendant 3.5cm x 2.5cm; 9.47g.

Condition: Remarkably good for its age, with minor historic soldering to the filigree back. One pearl is darker and less lustrous, a natural feature. All parts intact and sound.
