    • This unusual antique emerald and diamond ring dates from the early 19th century, circa 1800 and was probably made in France or Germany.

A superb example of the uniqueness of Georgian era jewellery, this type of floral ring particularly coveted amongst collected. Known as giardinetti or giardinetto (Italian for “little garden”), rings of this type were in fashion throughout Europe by the mid-18th century.

This elegant and unusual openwork example features a spray of two flowers set with emeralds and small rose cut diamonds. The emeralds are foil-backed and set in closed, rubover settings.

The band is decorated with beautifully worked Rococo foliate motifs all the way around. However what makes this ring so special are the intricate engravings on the underside, kept secret for the wearer alone.

UK size M, US size 5

The ring weighs 4.78 grams, it is unmarked but tests as 18K gold. Despite being over 220 years old, the ring remains in good and very wearable condition. All of the stones are original to the ring and securely set. The two emeralds seem to be of a slightly different green hue.

These rare floral-themed jewels reflect the mid-18th century taste for the swirling asymmetry of the Rococo style, partly inspired by the newfound fascination with botany and horticulture that began a century earlier.
