    • A particularly sculptural antique French gold snake ring, dating to around 1910 and crafted in solid 18K gold.

The ring is formed as an intertwined serpent, its body looping through itself to create an unusual wishbone-shaped profile. The surface is richly engraved throughout, with scale-like and stippled detailing continuing around the body and even into less visible areas of the ring. The snake’s head is clearly modelled, giving the piece a wonderfully organic, almost archaeological appearance.

Serpent jewellery enjoyed enormous popularity throughout the 19th century and remained fashionable into the early 20th century. Traditionally associated with eternity, renewal and enduring attachment, the motif became particularly prominent in sentimental jewellery after Queen Victoria received a snake engagement ring from Prince Albert in 1839.

The ring bears the French eagle’s-head hallmark for 18K gold, together with a maker’s lozenge. At 7.25g, it has a notably substantial feel for its size.

      Details: 18K gold · France, c.1910 · 7.25g · UK size J / US 4.5 · French eagle-head and maker’s lozenge marks

Very good antique condition, with clear engraved detail throughout.
