    • A Georgian ruby and diamond cluster ring, made in Italy around 1800: a bright pink ruby within a sea of twenty diamonds.

The ruby is foil-backed, a period technique that places a thin metal foil behind the stone to heighten its colour. It is surrounded by twenty closely set flat-cut diamonds in a flower-head cluster. Flat-cut diamonds, with a broad flat top and few facets, are an early cut.

The cluster is set in a silver head on a 14K gold ring. The rosy gold shoulders taper towards the back of the shank.

It sits fairly flat on the finger for everyday wear: an unusual and romantic antique engagement ring.

Details: c.1800; Italy; unmarked, tests as 14K gold, with silver head; ruby approx. 0.3ct; diamonds 1mm to 3mm; cluster 14mm x 13mm; UK L½, US 6; 4.72g.

Condition: Good overall condition for a ring over 200 years old.
