    • An early Georgian 'crowned heart' ring of about 1740: a love token, and a forerunner of the engagement ring.

Engagement rings were uncommon at the time, but crowned heart rings were the exception, given as tokens of love and lasting devotion. In the Rococo style of the mid-18th century, a triangular rose cut diamond sits in a heart-shaped silver setting, flanked by rose cuts on the shoulders, with three more diamonds forming the crown above.

The finely detailed shank and the design recall the giardinetti ('little garden') rings popular across Europe at the time. A similar ring is in the Rijksmuseum (BK-16589; see final photo).

      Small, delicate and deeply romantic.

Details: c.1740; high-carat gold, unmarked, tests as 18K, with silver settings; rose cut diamonds; front 9mm north to south, tapering to 1mm at the back; UK M½, US 6½; 1.73g.

Condition: Please ask for a detailed condition report.
