A French Art Deco platinum ring of the mid-1920s: two lotus flowers in diamonds around a cultured pearl.At first glance the openwork outline looks like an hourglass; look closer and it becomes two lotus flowers facing outwards. The lotus was a favourite motif after the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 set off a wave of Egyptomania across Europe and America.A 4mm cultured pearl sits at the centre, softly lustrous against the diamonds. The face is set with rose cut diamonds, accented by two slightly larger old mine cuts (1.2ct in total). The two larger stones have a very subtle yellowish tint and open culets, suggesting they were reused from earlier 19th-century jewels.Elegant and unusual: a fine alternative engagement ring.Details: mid-1920s; France; platinum, French mask hallmark; cultured pearl 4mm; rose cut and old mine cut diamonds (1.2ct in total); face 18mm x 13mm; band 1.5mm at the back; UK K½, US 5½; 4.68g.Condition: Excellent; all diamonds are secure and there are minimal signs of wear.
