A late Mughal gold and ruby ring from India, about 1850.The 1ct cabochon ruby is cut in the Indian way of the 18th and 19th centuries, keeping as much of the stone as possible, so its dome is gently uneven and natural. It sits in an open-backed claw (belcher) mount, and the high-karat gold shoulders are engraved with flowers. The open claws show European influence, typical of European rings of the early 19th century; European jewellers were welcomed at court and some worked in the imperial workshops. Yet the engraving and the cutting of the stone reveal an Indian hand. The 22K gold still has its warm, buttery glow: a handsome ring for everyday wear.Details: c.1850; India; unmarked, tests as 22K gold; ruby cabochon 1ct; front 10mm, back 2.5mm; UK O, US 7; 6g.Condition: Great condition; the gold retains its shine.
