A particularly attractive French Alphonse Augis love medal, dating to around the 1970 and crafted in 18K gold.The openwork heart surrounds the celebrated inscription “+ qu’hier – que demain” — “more than yesterday, less than tomorrow”. The phrase derives from an 1889 poem written by Rosemonde Gérard to her husband, playwright Edmond Rostand: “Today more than yesterday, and far less than tomorrow.” Alphonse Augis transformed the sentiment into jewellery in the early 20th century, creating one of the most recognisable French love tokens.This later example has an especially decorative design, with a central sunburst medal suspended within an open heart, accented with enamel and a baguette-cut red spinel forming the minus sign.
