A small vintage French 18K gold heart pendant by Alphonse Augis circa 1950’s, the celebrated maker of the Médaille d’Amour. The design carries the famous romantic phrase “+ qu’hier – que demain”, meaning “more than yesterday, less than tomorrow.” It is a shortened rebus version of the line by the French poet Rosemonde Gérard: “Aujourd’hui plus qu’hier et bien moins que demain” - a declaration of ever-growing love written for her husband, Edmond Rostand. Alphonse Augis first adapted the phrase into jewellery in 1907, and it became one of the most recognisable French love medals of the 20th century.This example is heart-shaped, with a finely striped ground and applied black enamel lettering. The plus sign is set above the words “qu’hier”, while the minus sign is represented by a small baguette-cut pink spinel, set above “que demain.” The result is both sentimental and graphic: a clever piece of French love jewellery that turns poetry into a miniature visual code.The pendant is crafted in 18K gold and bears the French eagle-head hallmark, along with the maker’s lozenge A.A for Alphonse Augis.
