    • An unusual gold signet ring set with an approximately 1,800-year-old Ancient Roman jasper intaglio, dating to around the 2nd–3rd century AD.

The mottled jasper, naturally patterned in deep green, brown, orange and black, is finely engraved with a Triton: a mythological marine figure shown here with a human upper body, crustacean-like foreparts and a curling fish tail, holding a trident or spear in one hand and a conch horn in the other.

Tritons formed part of the retinue of Neptune, Roman god of the sea. Comparable Roman gems depict these hybrid sea creatures carrying tridents and sounding conch shells, imagery closely connected with the power and movement of the sea. As an intaglio worn on the hand, the image would have functioned both as personal ornament and as a highly individual emblem drawn from classical mythology.

The ancient stone was later mounted in France during the 19th century in a simple 18K gold signet setting, allowing the Roman carving to remain the focus. The French eagle’s-head hallmark indicates 18K gold and Paris assay.

      Details: Roman jasper intaglio, c.2nd–3rd century AD · French 18K gold mount, 19th century · UK M / US 6 · 2.3g · intaglio 12 × 9mm

Condition: Good antique condition and fully wearable, with age-related surface wear to the ancient stone consistent with its considerable age.
