    • This outstanding 14K gold ring dates to the very late 18th century, circa 1790 and was made in Western Europe.

The 1.94ct step cut natural emerald is mounted horizontally east to west in a rub-over setting and displays a gorgeous bright green hue, likely to be of Columbian origin. It is flanked either side by rose cut diamonds in closed-back rubover silver settings. The triangular facets of rose cuts were very popular during the Georgian period as they glistened more beautifully in candlelight than any other cut. This elegant ring sits quite flat on the finger and the underside of the bezel is open-backed (possibly a later alteration in order to clean behind the stones and let light to pass through).

This ring exhibits many of the typical characteristics of 18th century European rings; the convex underside of the bezel is engraved with rays which emanate from the centre, the forked shoulders are set with rose cut diamonds, and there is a distinct c-curl motif where the shoulders meet the head. The shank is decorated with rococo scrollwork motifs and flower heads, typical ornamentation of the period. The ring remains is in excellent condition despite being around 200 years old. There is evidence of a historic resizing to the back of the shank and under loupe magnification, there are some faint age-related abrasions to the emerald facet junctions which is expected with jewels of this age. The ring is unmarked but tests as 14K gold.

      UK size K / US size 5.25

The ring weighs 4.14 grams. Diamonds measure 2mm in diameter. Emerald measures 9mm x 7.5mm x 4mm. Shank measures 2mm wide at the back.

A beauty from a bygone era, this stately little Georgian ring looks incredible on the hand and would make a characterful engagement ring or a unique addition to a collector’s jewel box.
