A heavy antique ecclesiastical bloodstone intaglio signet ring, circa 1900.
The oval bloodstone has been intricately carved to depict a cross. Carved bloodstone intaglios like this example typically would have been used to make wax seals. The gemstone is set in a smooth, heavy oval signet mount crafted in 18K gold.
The bloodstone heliotrope gemstone displays bright red splatters across the dark green background with high contrast. Bloodstone is the March birthstone, historically known as the ‘stone of courage’, worn by warriors in battle for protection and to stop bleeding wounds. From an ecclesiastical perspective, the red in the bloodstone is thought to represent the blood of Christ, which would protect the wearer from harm or injury. This is why since the Middle Ages many religious cameos, intaglios and sculptures were carved from bloodstone and carried as amulets.UK size Q 1/2, US size 8.25
The ring weighs a good 11.56 grams, and the bloodstone measures 13mm x 10mm. The front of the band measures 16mm across, whereas the band measures 6mm wide at the back.
The ring is stamped as and tests as solid 18K gold. The ring is in fantastic condition despite being 120 years old.
