An Egyptian Revival gold ring of about 1860-70, with a carved green scarab that swivels in its bezel.The dark green scarab, probably steatite or glazed composition, is carved with hieroglyph-style markings underneath and turns in a revolving bezel, as ancient scarabs did, so it could be worn as an amulet or used as a seal. The 18K gold shoulders are wire-wrapped and textured in the archaeological style.The design reflects the Egyptian revival that followed Auguste Mariette's discovery of the gold-filled tomb of Queen Ahhotep in 1859.
