    • Antique French Art Nouveau gold figural chimera ring, circa 1910. The mythical winged chimera beast would have probably started life as a stick pin and has since been converted into a ring.

According to Greek mythology, a Chimera was a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature, composed of different animal parts from Lycia, Asia Minor. It is usually depicted as a lion, often with wings and a tail of a snake. This creature once again became popular in the decorative arts during the late 19th century, when Victorian gothic and archeological revivals reinvigorated interest in ancient and fantastical motifs. This type of chased gold jewellery in the form of mythological beasts first appeared around 1880 in Paris and later spread to the rest of continental Europe, Britain, and America.

      UK size R, US size 8 3/4

The ring weighs 4.25 grams and the outer band is stamped with a French control mark to indicate 750 gold (18K). The head of the ring measures 18mm x 9mm at its widest points and the band measures 2.5mm across. Both the ring band and head test as 18K gold.
