    • An elegant Edwardian-era sapphire and diamond ring, dating to the early 20th century, c.1910. The ring is crafted in platinum, a metal which became especially fashionable in fine jewellery during this period, allowing jewellers to create lighter, more delicate settings than had been possible in heavier gold mounts.

At the centre is an antique cushion-cut natural sapphire, around 1.6ct. The sapphire has a deep royal-blue colour, with flashes of brighter blue visible as it catches the light. It is framed in a finely milgrained setting, with an openwork design that gives the ring a very distinctive profile - almost eye-like in form, with the central sapphire held between curved platinum lines.

The shoulders are set with old European-cut diamonds, with smaller rose-cut diamonds further along the tapering shoulders. The combination of sapphire, old-cut diamonds, platinum and milgrain detailing is very typical of Edwardian jewellery, but the openwork “eye” design makes this a particularly unusual example.

The ring is a UK size M / US 6.25 and weighs 2.14g. It is open-set, allowing light to pass through the sapphire, and remains in very good condition, with the stones secure and only light surface wear consistent with age.

A refined and unusual Edwardian platinum sapphire and diamond ring, with strong period detailing, a rich antique sapphire, and a beautifully balanced openwork design.
