A Victorian-period heart locket, made in Austro-Hungary c.1880, probably Vienna, and crafted in rosy 14K gold. The front is smoothly domed and set with a small rose-cut diamond of approximately 3mm, placed within an engraved starburst or gypsy-style flush setting; a restrained but very effective detail, with the diamond sitting low into the surface rather than raised in claws. The locket opens to reveal its original inner compartment, with fabric beneath glass ready to hold a photograph, lock of hair, miniature textile, or other private memento. Heart lockets were among the most personal jewels of the later 19th century, worn close to the body and often given as sentimental tokens; the combination here of a heart form and star-set diamond gives the piece a particularly typical Victorian language of affection. The pendant measures approximately 2.3 × 1.8cm and weighs 4.04g. It is marked with the maker’s mark IV and tests as 14K gold. Thee suspension loop allows the pendant to be worn from a chain or added to a charm collection.Condition is good for age, with light surface wear and a few small dents, mostly to the underside/reverse, as visible in the photographs. The locket opens and closes as it should; the interior glass and fabric remain present, and the rose-cut diamond is secure.
