    • This rare and distinctive antique gold cluster ring dates to the 19th century. At its heart is a large, high-domed 6.1ct bi-colour sapphire displaying a striking deep chromium green hue with flashes of teal blue. Surrounding the central sapphire is a halo of fourteen large rose-cut diamonds, each set in rubover silver settings, a hallmark of Georgian jewellery design.

Rose-cut diamonds, with their large triangular facets, were favoured during the Georgian and Victorian eras for their ability to glisten beautifully in candlelight. Unlike the closed-back and foiled settings typical of the period, these diamonds are unusually set in open-backed mounts, allowing light to pass through and enhancing their brilliance while also mitigating the buildup of dirt behind the stones—a common issue with foiled settings.

Silver motifs adorn the shoulders, and the band, crafted in 18K gold, features a delicate Rococo-style pattern. The combined use of silver and gold, characteristic of 19th century craftsmanship, highlights the artistry of this piece. The rose-cut diamonds measure approximately 3mm in diameter.

      Details:

      • UK size L½ (US size 6)
      • Ring weight: 7.69 grams
      • Sapphire: Bi-colour, deep green with teal undertones (6.1ct)
      • Diamonds: Approx. 3mm in diameter

The ring remains in overall good condition for its age, with age-appropriate wear including some surface rubbing and patina to the gold and silver. All stones are securely set, and the sapphire shows minor surface scratches under loupe magnification, which could be polished out by a professional jeweller if desired.

The green hue of the sapphire proved difficult to capture in photographs; please refer to the accompanying video for a more accurate depiction of its captivating colour.

A remarkable example of 19th century artistry, this cluster ring combines unique gemstone characteristics with timeless craftsmanship, making it a rare and meaningful addition to any collection.
