    • This exquisite late 18th-century ring, likely crafted in Portugal around 1780, showcases a stunning combination of imperial topaz and diamonds, emblematic of Georgian-era design.

At its heart is a natural cushion-cut imperial topaz weighing approximately 1.2 carats, mounted horizontally in an east-to-west rub-over setting. The stone radiates a warm peach-orange hue, enhanced by the closed, foil-backed silver setting that intensifies its brilliance, particularly under candlelight.

The ring's shoulders feature delicate rose-cut diamonds, similarly set in foil-backed silver, adding a subtle sparkle. The convex underside of the bezel is engraved with radiating rays—a hallmark of 18th-century European craftsmanship.

The use of imperial topaz during this period is often associated with Portuguese jewellery, as Brazil's gemstone-rich mines, controlled by Portugal, supplied jewellers with an array of vibrant stones. These jewels were highly sought after by the noble class, as evidenced by inventories such as the 1759 jewellery collection of the Duke of Aveiro, which lists Brazilian topazes prominently.

The ring is crafted in 18K gold and weighs 2.85 grams. It is a UK size N½ (US size 7).

      Condition:

This piece is in remarkable condition for its age. Under loupe magnification, faint abrasions to the gem’s facet junctions are visible, commensurate with over two centuries of history. Care should be taken to avoid exposing the foil-backed stones to water, which could darken the foil and affect the gemstones’ appearance.

This exceptional Georgian ring is not only a wearable piece of history but also a testament to the artistry of 18th-century European jewellers, perfect for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
